Construction
During construction, utilities are at their most vulnerable point, if you haven't utilised forward planning or located, marked and mapped utilities prior, your project could be heading for disaster.
Before ground excavation can commence it is the principal contractors responsibility to know where all the utilities, on and around the site are, this includes works associated with the site such as infrastructure upgrading. Once this information is collected the PC should discuss with subcontractors the hazards associated with each individual scope of work. Utility locating must be done before each stage of work commences. It is good practise to use one locating company for the entire project as they will become intimate with the site, this alone will save you money.
Utility locating should be done for the entire site and associated works by the Principal Contractor, A plan of utility whereabouts should be given to sub-contractors and all concerns should be discussed with sub-contractors, then it is the sub-contractors responsibility to locate and expose utilities within their scope. You should utilise vacuum potholing to expose utilities.
All too often PC's pass the buck to the sub-contractors when, had they identified utilities first, the chances of damage could have been greatly reduced, especially if you are using a number of different locating companies on each site. Early detection of utilities will save you money and you will find you project will streamline early.
Utility detection utilised correctly will;
- Save you time

- Reduce down time
- Reduce safety issues
